33 Years Later and Still Working

It was in 1980 that we met Carmen (pictured here at the right) and her husband Manuel by way of a Gospel of John that we left under the front door of their house.

In 1987 the Lord moved us on to another phase of our ministry.  The coffee percolator (also visible in the picture) was one of the items that we left at Manuel and Carmen's house at that time.

This week Carmen brought the percolator out to show it to me.  I was amazed that it still works after all these years!

But the greater story and cause for rejoicing is that 33 years later after meeting Manuel and Carmen they are still faithful in the Lord's work serving Him on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Gospel of John we put under their door that day in 1980 cost us .05 cents at the time.  That nickel is still yielding fruit and dividends 33 years later!  Thank the Lord for I Corinthians 15:58 "Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain."

Their work ethic is to be admired!

Carmen's Cooking Class

Today Carmen taught the ladies of our team how to cook salbutes. These are very delicious and are a regional food that is common in Yucatan.

The South Carolina ladies went with Carment to the store and purchased the ingredients necessary for making salbutes. Then they went to purchase the chicken for the salbutes. Man, you talk about good!

The best part of the whole thing is that all the team got to eat salbutes. Boy, we made pigs out of ourselves. Kendall is the skinniest guy on the team, but you should have seen how that kid ate salbutes! He ate 10 of them, which is proof that 1) salbutes are just out of this world 2) the gals from the Victory Chapel team are good cooks 3) the guys from Victory Chapel can really put away food and 4) Carmen is a good teacher!

Preparation for the Evangelistic Events

Our evangelistic efforts for Project Yucatan for Christ require hours of preparation. The team from Victory Chapel Baptist Church worked with the Yucatan team of Project Yucatan in preparing for our Saturday and Sunday evangelistic events.

Six hundred bags of candy were prepared as gifts for children who attend the puppet shows. Hundreds of bracelets with the colors of the wordless book were prepared. Literature was also stamped and readied for the efforts.

Literature continues to be an essential element of our evangelistic efforts for Project Yucatan. Long after the evangelistic teams leave the pueblos where we minister, the printed page stays behind and continues to be a witness for days, weeks and months.

Learning Spanish

Our current team for Project Yucatan for Christ is from Victory Chapel Baptist Church in South Carolina. We are in Yucatan for evangelistic efforts.

The team met members of the church in Merida to take a course in basic Spanish words and phrases that they will use while on this trip. The Yucatecan members of Project Yucatan have been taking English classes; therefore, they were able to communicate with the team from Victory Chapel.

After an initial meeting where we all met together, the Yucatecans and Americans split up in small teams to learn and practice their words and phrases. These sessions turned out to be an interesting time of learning and laughing together! After the Spanish classes we celebrated by eating pizza. Food always helps the learning process!
